Location: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Completion Status: Under Construction

Owner: Algoma University

Scope: Room Acoustics, Sound Isolation, Mechanical Noise and Vibration Control

Makwa Waakaa’igan Indigenous Centre of Cultural Excellence at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario serves as a beacon for healing, cultural preservation, and cross-cultural learning. Drawing from Indigenous teachings, the design symbolizes Makwa (the Bear) as a healer and protector, rising from the land toward the spirits. Its form and materials are deeply rooted in the natural landscape, creating a blend of architecture and environment. The centre provides spaces for gathering, learning, and ceremony while inviting reflection on the site’s history as a former residential school. Thorbahn Acoustics provided support to the project team to verify that the design meets appropriate acoustic and noise criteria for a learning and gathering environment. We provided design recommendations to address the acoustic performance of multi-storey gathering and cultural learning spaces, to isolate classrooms from other noise-generating spaces, and to ensure that mechanical equipment sound levels were kept sufficiently low in sensitive areas.

Location: Guysborough, Nova Scotia

Completion Status: Under Construction

Owner: Mulgrave Road Theatre

Scope: Room Acoustics, Sound Isolation, Mechanical Noise and Vibration Control

The new Mulgrave Road Theatre Centre for the Arts in Guysborough comprises a renovation and addition to a former retail building to create a new black box theatre, a lobby, office and meeting spaces, back of house and support spaces. From early in the design phase of the project, Thorbahn Acoustics was an integral member of the design team, incorporating acoustic treatment strategies to achieve a very low noise level and an appropriate balance of sound absorption and reflection within the black box theatre. The Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) theatre walls serve to isolate the performance space from exterior noises such as road traffic, as well as from other occupied areas of the building.

The Under One Sky Awitgati Longhouse & Culture Centre in Fredericton is a net-zero facility designed to serve the urban Indigenous community with vital programs for all ages. The building’s layout draws inspiration from a turtle shell, with a series of interconnected pods arranged in a semi-circle and linked by corridors housing informal gathering areas. As the Acoustical Consultant for the project, Thorbahn Acoustics worked with the architecture and engineering teams to design acoustical treatments and to isolate sensitive areas from their surroundings and from HVAC equipment noise.
